Red Light therapy
Red light therapy (photobiomodulation) uses precise red and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths to support how your cells make energy. These wavelengths are absorbed by cellular photoacceptors—especially cytochrome-c oxidase in the mitochondria—which can:
- Improve ATP efficiency (cellular energy)
- Support microcirculation and nutrient delivery
- Calm excess inflammation and oxidative stress
In practical terms, our LED red light therapy panels deliver targeted red/NIR light (with no UV) to help your body’s natural repair and recovery processes. It’s non-invasive and non-thermal at typical wellness doses.
General info only; not medical advice.
Red light (visible, ~600–700 nm) mainly benefits surface and near-surface tissues (skin texture, complexion, wound care support).
Near-infrared light (invisible, typically ~780–1100 nm for PBM) penetrates deeper to muscles and joints for recovery, performance, and comfort.
Most users get excellent results running Red + NIR together on our home red light therapy devices.
Red/NIR primarily supports mitochondrial function (cellular energy/ATP). Better mitochondrial efficiency can have system-wide benefits. There are numerous scientific studies demonstrating benefits for an array of issues—users commonly apply our home red light therapy panels for:
- Skin quality & appearance (tone, texture, radiance)
- Wound-care support and post-treatment recovery routines
- Joint and muscle recovery, stiffness, and post-exercise soreness, inflammation reduction, pain relief
- Circulation, energy, sleep, and overall wellness
Benefits are often cumulative with consistent use.
Important: even though red light therapy can positively influence many biological processes, we do not—and cannot—claim that our products diagnose, treat, or cure any specific medical condition. This is general information only and not medical advice. Please consult a qualified clinician about your personal situation.
Adjustable pulsation frequency is a next-generation feature that lets your red light therapy panel deliver light in adjustable on/off cycles rather than continuously. This allows you to customise treatment modes for comfort, recovery, focus, or relaxation, while still receiving the same therapeutic wavelengths. Our Mitopia Radiance Pro red light panels panels make it simple with fully adjustable frequency control and preset pulsing modes.
For full details, see our blog article “Pulsed vs Continuous Red Light Therapy” in the Benefits of Red Light Therapy section of our website.
TLDR version of blog article below:
At a Glance: Pulsed Red Light Therapy
- Continuous red light therapy is proven for skin health, recovery, energy metabolism, and sleep.
- Pulsation frequency is a next-generation feature that lets you shape how light is delivered — calmer at low Hz, energising and smooth at higher Hz.
- Low frequencies (1–10 Hz) are linked with soothing effects and discomfort relief.
- 40 Hz has been studied in brain research for focus and alertness.
100–300 Hz supports recovery and muscle performance at higher intensities.- 500–1000 Hz+ provides ultra-smooth, comfortable delivery for longer sessions or sensitive skin.
- The Mitopia Radiance Pro offers both continuous and pulsed light, with fully adjustable frequencies and convenient presets like Sleep, Recovery, Skin, Muscle, Mood, and Joint Pain.
- Built to ISO 13485 quality standards with EN 62471 photobiological safety testing and LEDs calibrated to ±5 nm, ensuring professional-grade safety and precision.
In short: pulsed light therapy gives you control and personalisation, while Mitopia makes it simple with ready-to-use modes and full adjustability for advanced users.
Red and near-infrared light need a clear path to your skin to deliver the highest benefit. Even light, thin fabrics scatter and absorb some of the wavelengths, reducing how much energy reaches your cells. Dense or opaque materials block the light almost completely. That’s why sessions are most effective when the area you want to treat is uncovered, allowing the therapeutic wavelengths to be absorbed directly by the skin and underlying tissues.
We recommend starting with 3-5 sessions per week, each lasting 10-20 minutes, depending on your individual needs and goals. Always follow the specific instructions provided with your red light therapy device. Consistent use is key to get the full benefits from Red Light Therapy.
The ideal distance depends on both the size of your panel and how you’re using it.
- For smaller, handheld or mini panels (such as the Mitopia Radiance Mini 60W), these are designed for local treatment of areas like joints or the face, you’ll want to position the device close to the skin (typically 5–15 cm / 2–6 inches). This ensures maximum intensity and faster results in the targeted area.
- For larger, full-body panels (such as the Mitopia Radiance Pro series 1500W and above), it’s usually best to step back slightly — around 20–60 cm (8–24 inches). This allows the light to cover a wider area of your body, while still delivering enough power for effective therapy.
Remember: closer means stronger intensity and shorter session times. If you’re further away, you still receive the same therapeutic wavelengths of red and near-infrared light — just at a lower intensity, which means results accumulate more slowly. That’s why if you’re stretching, doing yoga, or simply relaxing near your panel, you don’t need to stay “glued” to it. You’ll still benefit, but it may be worth allowing for a longer session to balance the lower intensity.
As a rule of thumb:
- Up close for targeted treatment (maximum power in a small area).
- Further back for whole-body coverage (more area at once, slightly lower intensity).
Our clinical-grade panels are designed to be effective across a flexible range of distances, so you can tailor your routine to your goals, comfort, and lifestyle.
Timelines vary depending on your goals and starting point. Some people notice improvements in discomfort, muscle recovery, or joint stiffness within the first few sessions. For others, changes in skin health, sleep quality, mood, and energy levels develop more gradually, often building over a few weeks of regular use.
It’s also worth remembering that not every benefit is immediately obvious. Some effects — such as cellular energy support, reduced inflammation, or circadian rhythm balance — are harder to directly “feel” day to day. Often the best way to recognise progress is to look back after several weeks and notice improvements in recovery times, sleep patterns, or overall wellbeing.
The key to success is consistency. We recommend using your red light therapy panel 3–5 times per week, especially during the first couple of months. Like any wellness practice, results compound over time as your body adapts and responds to the light.
Our clinical-grade panels deliver precisely calibrated wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, ensuring your sessions are both safe and effective. Whether you’re aiming for faster recovery, anti-ageing skin support, or better sleep rhythms, sticking with a routine gives you the best chance to see and feel results.
Our panels are clinical-grade wellness devices, designed to the same standards used in professional clinics. Each unit uses LEDs with peak wavelengths validated to within ±5 nm, ensuring consistent, reliable output across the therapeutic range. This level of precision sets our devices apart from many lower-cost consumer panels.
Every panel is manufactured under an ISO 13485 quality management system — the internationally recognised QMS standard for medical devices. This means the design and production process follows the same rigorous quality and safety controls as true medical devices. However, it’s important to note that while our products are built to medical-grade manufacturing standards, we do not market them as regulated medical devices.
Our panels also carry FDA, CE, RoHS, and EN 62471 compliance. EN 62471 is especially important as it confirms independent testing for photobiological safety — showing the light output is safe for eyes and skin when used as directed.
Full medical device certification under FDA or EU MDR is an extremely complex and costly process, and it is not realistically applied to red light panels in this category. If you see broad claims of “medical device approval” on similar products, they should be able to show specific certification — which is rare.
We prefer to be transparent: our devices are high-quality, clinical-grade wellness tools suitable for home and professional use, manufactured to medical device standards, but not marketed as medical devices. All information we provide is for general educational purposes only, not medical advice.
Yes. All panels in the Mitopia range operate with zero visible flicker.
For red/NIR use, eye protection is optional and comfort-based when used sensibly (short sessions, sensible distances). There is some emerging evidence that Red light can be beneficial for eye health in some circumstances, but we advise to never stare directly into the LEDs at close range.
For blue light (available on the Mitopia Radiance Pro series), we recommend goggles, especially at close range, as blue can be uncomfortable for eyes.
Near-infrared (NIR) is invisible to the human eye. Those LEDs are on, but you can’t see them glow like the red ones. The red light panels is working normally and still delivering its therapeutic benefits.
Red/NIR light panels use 600–950 nm wavelengths that modulate cells (photobiomodulation) rather than heat you up. Infrared saunas mainly use far-infrared (3,000–100,000 nm) to warm tissue/air, so they feel hot; red/NIR typically feels like gentle warmth.
Evidence is limited. We recommend a precautionary approach: consult your midwife/doctor before use.
We do not recommend using red/NIR light therapy to treat cancer. While red/NIR therapy may support comfort/recovery in some contexts, there is theoretical concern about stimulating cellular activity. If you have (or had) cancer, only use under your oncology team’s guidance and avoid treating tumour sites without medical direction.
In principle, mammals respond similarly to photobiomodulation via red/NIR wavelengths. There are reports of people using it to help dogs with arthritis and simular conditions. However, it should be noted that animals can’t report discomfort. If using with pets, monitor them closely during the red light session, keep RED/NIR sessions short, avoid the eyes, and consult a vet—especially for medical conditions.
All Mitopia red light panels are independently tested and validated at 0.0 µT at the user position (effectively negligible). Maintain normal electrical safety practices.

What this means for you:
When you choose one of our panels, you’re choosing a clinical-grade red light therapy device that combines rigorous safety testing, internationally recognised compliance, and exceptional wavelength accuracy. The result is safe, consistent, and effective red and near-infrared light therapy you can rely on, whether for wellness, recovery, or performance.
Our panels are manufactured in China by a vetted, ISO-certified partner that we selected specifically for their component quality, consistency, and comprehensive test data. The reality is that almost all reputable LED red light therapy panels worldwide are produced in China, because that’s where the advanced LED supply chain and manufacturing capability is concentrated.
What matters is not where they are made, but how they are made. We went through a detailed vetting process to ensure our partner had the right certifications, quality management systems, and track record. They manufacture under ISO 13485 standards, supply full safety certifications (including CE, RoHS, EN 62471, and FDA compliance), and provide strict testing and validation data for every production batch.
You may see some companies claiming their panels are “UK made” or “locally manufactured.” In practice, this usually means that a small part of the assembly or packaging is done in the UK, while the core components — LEDs, drivers, housings — still come from China. It’s essentially unavoidable, as this is where the global production base is.
The difference is in the quality of the panels and the transparency of the brand. Our panels are the result of careful supplier selection, strict quality control, and ongoing validation — ensuring they are top-quality, reliable, and built to clinical-grade standards.
